Chandler Tech Incubator Becomes Cultural Crucible with Desert Bloom Phoenix
Chandler, AZ - May 1, 2010
For the past 2 years, a collaborative organization in Chandler known as Gangplank has been the hub of the Valley's tech community. Now, the group aims to upset the Valley's music and art status quo with a series of events designed to bring about a radical melding of the local music, art, and tech scenes.
The group wants "to give a platform of expression to those who have talent but for whatever reason have had their creativity suppressed, and to make a real crucible for creative collaboration in the Valley," says event volunteer Nicholas DiBiase. "We want to create profound connection between tech innovators, big thinkers, musicians and artists in a way that's going to really build up cultural capital here in the Phoenix area."
Organizer Brandon Franklin sees the event as part of "an upward spiral" for the Valley. "We are surrounded every day by talented people, but most of us don't realize it." say Franklin. "Desert Bloom is about tearing back the curtain that keeps these people hidden from each other's sight, and letting them meet, talk, and cross-pollinate. When you take creative people, bring them together, and tell them to cut loose and go nuts, things happen that will blow your mind."
The first event in the series, Music and Art : Desert Bloom 1, happens May 14 and is a showcase of 7 local live music acts, 9 visual artists, and 2 DJs, all of whom are associated with the Valley's tech and creative class. The artists are all donating their talents and tickets are available free of charge.
Free tickets and information about the event are available at the Desert Bloom website : http://DesertBloomPhoenix.com . Twitter updates are @DesertBloomPhx .
Gangplank, located in Chandler, has been working since 2008 to foster and innovation and collaboration while incubating entrepreneurship in the greater Phoenix area. They can be found on the Web at http://GangplankHQ.com and on Twitter @Gangplank |

The 18th annual Toys for Tots Hangar Party was held at the Chandler Air Service hangar at the Chandler Municipal Airport on Friday Dec. 11, 2009. The annual event started in 1991 as an opportunity to have two local businesses, Chandler Air Service and San Tan Dusters to provide a way of thanking and showing appreciation for their customers and support of the Airport. The Chandler Compadres were a co-supporter of this event and with their efforts with the Chandler Boys and Girls Club provided the outlet and distribution to local Chandler Families of the Toys and food. A caveat of the collection is that it stay within Chandler to benefit those who live here.
The event was complete with live Country music, catered BBQ and a hangar full of hay. The only price was to bring a new unwrapped toy. This December over 470 meals were served and truck load of toys were collected. Food contributions were added in 2008 and increased the amount of collections.
The party has added the Chandler Airport Alliance as a co-supporter this year. This group is made up of businesses, pilots, airport users and local residents. Chandler Air Service along with the Alliance and its supporters will continue the "Hangar Party" and show the contribution they can make to our community. San Tan Dusters relocated several years ago and is not longer a part of the event.

Saw 500 Days of Summer at the Harkins. Cute, original movie. Fellas, your girl will like this and you will too. Worth $9.50 and a $6 popcorn. An offbeat romantic comedy about a woman (Zooey Deschanel) who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her. Not your typical movie. Entertaining and funny. Don't waste your money on G.I. Joe or The Ugly Truth. Go see this movie instead.. |

I got a chance to head over to the Chandler Municipal Airport on Saturday. Took some photos of the Sentimental Journey, a World War II era B-17 Flying Fortress. The Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force flew it over from Mesa's Falcon Field. The kids enjoyed looking at her guns and bomb bays. It takes $2000 an hour to operate the Boeing B-17. I think they built 12,000 of them. Only about 50 left. Beautiful aircraft. I wish I could have seen it in the sky.
Also had some lunch at the Hangar Cafe. Great food there. Very friendly staff in the cafe. They are famous for their biscuits and gravy. Great atmosphere. Now that Sideburns has been closed for a few years, this is one of the last places to get real breakfast in Chandler. You know, not from a chain restaurant. I will post a copy of the menu.
My youngest daughter went for a helicopter ride for $30 from Quantum Helicopters. They had a Robinson R22 there for display, but I think she went up in a R44. She is 8 and plans on being a helicopter pilot. Events like this give kids like her a chance to dream. She has been on 5 rides so far in her young life and the pilots are always hrilled to take her up. She felt like a superstar. You should have seen her eyes when she went in the Chandler Air Service hangar. She got to see all the engines, propellers, and aircraft mechanic tools all over the place. She was in Heaven. She likes to take things apart and invent things. Now, she has it in her mind to be an aircraft mechanic. I told her some of the mechanics get to take the planes out after they fix them. She was hooked. Chandler Air Services is one of the few places left that still gives tailwheel training.
We saw some nice planes on Saturday. We didn't see Jon Melby, but we saw his Pitts S-1-11B. Wow. Pilots were giving rides in Super Cubs, and we saw a few Great Lakes bi-planes flying too. There were Pipers, Cessnas, and a few Beechcraft. Boeing made a beautiful bi-plane, and we saw a beautiful red Stearman. Lelaina liked learning words like wheel pants, Lycoming engines, and arc welder. We also met a man who has been a flight nurse for 26 years. He was an Arizona native but had a southern accent. Definitely a fun family event.

Chandler Ostrich Festival -- March 13-15th, 2009 For three fun-filled days in March, Tumbleweed Park in Chandler Arizona will resound with music, excitement, and laughter. Two stages spotlight a diverse sampling of great music, while a huge midway provides excitement to thousands of festival fans. Ostrich races complete with human jockeys are a sight unique to Chandler! Like any world class festival, all kinds of food will be available from the traditional fair favorites to Ostrich burgers. Thanks to the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, the area's rich and unusual heritage in Ostrich ranching provides the basis for a wonderful family oriented community event. Young and old alike can explore, relax, and enjoy the many exhibits, games, and shows. The Kids Zone is just for kids. It's loaded with all kinds of toys, bounces, animals and games. Our huge petting zoo is always a favorite. Cheer on your favorite pig in the pig races, or ride the ponies - there's so much to do! All day, the Community Stage features area dance, music, martial arts, and other entertaining talents. Then at night, it's the fun place to be with a music stage and dance floor. Also in the evenings, the Main Stage presents national headline acts sure to please. Plan to spend some fun time this year as we celebrate Chandler's unique heritage in a fun family friendly festival. Parking is $5, half of last year's price. You can buy your tickets ahead of time at Basha's and Food City... |
